The Truth About Getting a 7

A Grade 7 in IB Physics does not require perfection. Depending on the exam session, the boundary is typically 70–80%. That means you can afford to lose 20–30% of marks and still achieve the highest grade.

The strategy, therefore, is not “know everything” — it’s “maximise marks efficiently.”

The 6-Month Study Plan

Months 1–2: Foundation Building

  • Complete all syllabus topics — ensure you have notes on every topic
  • Solve textbook problems for each topic immediately after learning it
  • Start your IA research question and preliminary experiments

Months 3–4: Deep Practice

  • Transition from textbook to past papers — solve by topic
  • Build a formula sheet with equations you struggle to remember
  • Submit your IA draft for teacher feedback and revise

Months 5–6: Exam Preparation

  • Full past papers under timed conditions — at least 2 per week
  • Review examiner reports for your weakest topics
  • Focus on Paper 2 — it’s worth 35% of your grade
  • Practise graph construction by hand (linearisation, error bars, gradients)

The Habits of 7-Scorers

1. They Practise Under Exam Conditions

Solving problems at home with unlimited time and a textbook is not exam practice. Simulate real conditions:

  • Set a timer
  • No notes or textbook
  • Use only the Data Booklet
  • Mark your own work using the official mark scheme

2. They Learn from Mark Schemes, Not Just Solutions

The mark scheme shows you exactly what earns marks. Study it to understand:

  • What “explain” really requires
  • When working earns marks vs. just the final answer
  • How much detail is “enough”

3. They Master the Data Booklet

Students who score 7 know the Data Booklet intimately:

  • They can find any equation in under 10 seconds
  • They know which equations are NOT in the booklet (and memorise those)
  • They use the booklet’s constants instead of memorising them

4. They Focus on Weak Areas, Not Strong Ones

It’s more satisfying to practise topics you’re good at, but it’s less efficient. The biggest grade improvements come from turning a 3/10 topic into a 6/10 — not a 7/10 into an 8/10.

5. They Write Physics, Not Just Calculate

Many students can calculate answers but can’t explain the physics. Grade 7 requires both:

  • Calculations: Correct equations, substitution, units
  • Explanations: Causal reasoning, correct terminology, logical flow
  • Evaluations: Critical thinking about experiments and data

Paper-Specific Strategies

Paper 1A (MCQ)

  • Eliminate wrong options before selecting
  • Never leave a question blank (no negative marking)
  • For “which graph” questions, check extreme cases (x = 0, x → ∞)

Paper 1B (Structured)

  • Always state the equation before substituting
  • Draw diagrams even if not asked — they help you think
  • Use bullet points for explain questions

Paper 2 (Extended)

  • Start with the question you’re most confident about
  • Allocate time proportional to marks (1 minute per mark)
  • For graph questions, use a sharp pencil and a ruler
  • Never leave the evaluation section blank — it’s predictable and earnable

IA

  • Choose a topic you genuinely find interesting
  • Collect more data than you think you need
  • Include error bars on every graph
  • Have 3 specific, practical improvements in your evaluation

The Grade 7 Mindset

Getting a 7 is not about being the smartest student in the class. It’s about:

  1. Consistency — doing a little every day rather than cramming
  2. Strategy — knowing where marks are easy to collect
  3. Resilience — not panicking when you encounter an unfamiliar question
